Leek seeds — sweet, hardy and standing all winter

Leeks are one of the most useful and hardy vegetables you can grow — a mild, sweet member of the onion family that stands in the ground right through winter for fresh harvests when little else is going. The species is gathered under Allium porrum within our bulb vegetable range. New to growing? Our vegetable growing guide covers the basics.

Leeks need a long season, so timing matters — the calendar shows when to sow.

Early, maincrop and winter leeks

Early types are slim and quick for autumn; tough maincrop and winter leeks stand through hard frost. A milder cousin of the onion, leeks belong among our bulb vegetables and the wider root veg range.

Growing leeks from seed

Sow early in a seedbed or modules, then transplant the young plants into deep holes to blanch a long, sweet white shaft, watering them in. Earth up as they grow, then simply lift them through autumn and winter as you need them. Our soil guide helps with the ground prep.

Planning the winter plot? Here's where to look next.
