Helianthus debilis — the cucumberleaf sunflower

Helianthus debilis is the botanical name for the cucumberleaf or beach sunflower, a graceful, multi-branching annual that scatters dozens of smaller, refined sunflower blooms rather than one giant head. It is the species behind part of our sunflower range within the flower seed collection.

History & origin

Native to the southern United States, where it colonises coastal dunes and sandy ground, this sunflower has adapted to heat, drought and lean soils. That easy, branching nature made it a favourite parent of many modern multi-headed and cut-flower sunflowers grown today.

The genus name Helianthus joins the Greek helios, sun, and anthos, flower, while the species epithet debilis means weak or slender, describing its airy, branching stems rather than the single stout stalk of the common sunflower.

Botanical characteristics

Bushier and more refined than the giant sunflower, it produces a long succession of golden, dark-centred flowers on slender, well-branched stems. The pollen- and nectar-rich blooms are excellent for bees and butterflies, earning it a place among our pollinator flowers, while the abundance of smaller, long-stemmed flowers makes it a superb cut flower.

Growing Helianthus debilis from seed

Easy and quick, it is best sown direct where it is to flower once the soil has warmed in spring, or started under cover a little earlier. Give it full sun and free-draining soil; once established it is notably drought-tolerant and flowers prolifically until the frosts. Our flower growing guide and flower sowing calendar cover the timing.
